2023 - 2024

This module addresses one of the most important themes to emerge from recent history- the centrality of ethical and responsible leadership in the 21st century. As societies continually re-shape themselves, not least in the aftermath of certain ‘once in a generation’ crises, it is increasingly important to ensure that undergraduate students at St Mary’s have opportunities to engage with the concepts, problems, challenges and potential benefits to our societies of responsible leadership in a complex and fast-changing world. A world where old certainties/orthodoxies no longer prevail, and in which each individual leader will need to define for themselves how to interpret this concept in relation to established moral frameworks, and apply it in their everyday personal and professional lives.

This module will enable students to apply the intellectual resources linked to St Mary’s Catholic ethos, which stand in marked proximity to various established moral frameworks, and have themselves developed frameworks of effective leadership for the contemporary world which do not presuppose any religious commitment.
