2023 - 2024

This course will introduce ancient and classical philosophy through a broad survey of the writings of Plato and Aristotle. We will read four complete dialogues from Plato (Apology, Phaedo, Republic, Phaedrus) and substantial excerpts from a number of Aristotle's major works (Metaphysics, De Anima, Politics, Poetics, Nichomachean Ethics), and through this reading explore the way in which the Greeks understood the philosophical project with specific reference to their conceptions of the nature of the soul, their beliefs about man's ability to know and understand reality, and what this inquiry tells us about the proper ordering of human life and activity according to what is good, beautiful and true.
